No one talks about how dedicated Sam was to helping Bucky before he ever knew him. I know people think he did it to help Steve, because Steve’s his friend. And it’s partly that but I think it was mostly he was trying to help Bucky himself because you don’t leave a man behind. Sam worked rescue. This is what he does.
Sam also worked with vets dealing with trauma and if he knew anything about what happened to him that had to part of it. Bucky is, at his core, a traumatized vet and I’ll bet anything Sam sees that too, regardless of what hes done.
I just freaking love Sam.
In Civil War, we see Sam and Bucky snark back and forth at each other. I think many (including me originally) assume that they don’t like each other and view the other as competition for Steve’s attention. But I don’t think that’s it. Yes, Sam has worked with vets, but he’s also worked with Steve. Bucky and Steve aren’t like other vets. Fundamentally war does have the same impact, but Steve and Bucky are also a much different generation. That would require a different approach. Not quite as much open talking about feelings. And with Bucky, he probably just wants people to treat him normally. Or as normally as possible. He doesn’t want to be a weapon. He doesn’t want to be a scientific curiousity. He just wants to be Bucky. So when they snark at each other, Sam’s treating Bucky the same way he treats everyone else - including Steve. And, maybe more importantly, it’s how Bucky and Steve interacted when they were kids. There was always genuine friendship and concern there, but they didn’t pull punches either. Remember the whole “don’t do anything stupid/you’re taking all the stupid with you” bit from TFA? It’s the same kind of snark as Sam and Bucky.
See I think that’s why Sam is great for them as a companion. Because that’s exactly what Bucky (and Steve) is someone who trays them normally and dosent pull pinches, maybe is just straight up honest and forthright. Its another reason I’d love to see those two together more because he could genuunly help Bucky just by being like that with him. Don’t treat me as different just treat me as me. He needs people like that. We all do.
